Possible Front Passenger Air Bag Non-Deployment

In the event of a crash of sufficient severity, the front passenger air bag may not deploy as required, increasing the risk of injury.

 

Summary

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Jaguar XJ vehicles manufactured September 12, 2016, to October 26, 2016.

The affected vehicles have a front passenger air bag inflator initiator that may fail to ignite during a crash, preventing the air bag from deploying.

 

Remedy

Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin February 20, 2017.

CONDITION SUMMARY:

SITUATION:

An issue has been identified on certain vehicles within the listed Affected Vehicle Range where the front passenger airbag may not function properly due to a deviation in generant mix ratio.

ACTION:

Retailers are required to HOLD affected new vehicles that are within your control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new vehicle sale pending completion of the Service Instruction detailed in this Technical Bulletin. Unsold vehicles should have this performed as part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) process but must have it completed prior to vehicle handover to the customer.

Affected vehicles already in the hands of customers should be updated at the next available opportunity.

The Option Code(s) that allows for the drive in / drive out allowance can only be claimed if the vehicle is brought back into the workshop for this action alone to be undertaken.

1 Remove and discard the passenger airbag module (see TOPIx Workshop Manual section 501-20B: Supplemental Restraint System – Passenger Air Bag Module).

2 NOTE:

The replacement airbag serial number MUST be recorded on the claim verbatim.

Install a new passenger airbag module (see TOPIx Workshop Manual section 501-20B: Supplemental Restraint System – Passenger Air Bag Module).

Dear Jaguar Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Jaguar has decided that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2016, 2017model year Jaguar XJ vehicles

Your vehicle is included in this Recall action.

 

What is the concern?

The front passenger airbag may not function properly due to a deviation in airbag inflator initiator generant mix ratio.

In the event of a crash of sufficient severity, the front passenger airbag may not deploy when required. Failure to deploy can lead to increased injuries to the front passenger seat occupant.

 

What will Jaguar and your Jaguar Retailer do?

Jaguar is carrying out a Safety Recall of the vehicles mentioned above. An authorized Jaguar retailer will replace the front passenger airbag module.

There will be no charge for this repair.

 

What should you do?

Please contact your authorized Jaguar retailer at your earliest convenience to schedule an appointment to have Recall J080 completed on your vehicle.

 

How long will it take?

The work will be carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible in order to minimize inconvenience to customers and is expected to take approximately three hours, although your retailer may need your vehicle for a longer time. Your retailer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for the service visit.

Attention Leasing Agencies: Federal regulations require that you forward this recall notification to the lessee within TEN days.

 

Moved or no longer own a Jaguar?

If you are no longer the owner of this vehicle, Jaguar would greatly appreciate the name and address of the new owner, using the Information Change Form enclosed.
