Frontal Air Bags may not Deploy Properly

In the event of a crash, the driver and the front seat passenger may not be properly protected by the frontal air bags, increasing their risk of injury.

Summary

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain 2018 XF Sportbrake vehicles. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) calibration may be incorrect, possibly causing the frontal air bags to deploy improperly in a low speed crash.

 

Remedy

Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the air bag system, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 6, 2018. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar’s number for this recall is H090.

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of its intent to perform a voluntary Safety Recall on certain 2018 model year Jaguar XF Sportbrake vehicles imported into the United States market. Information relating to this Recall will be posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

United States Federal regulations require that retailers must be notified within a reasonable time after the manufacturer decides that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety or a noncompliance exists.

United States Federal law requires retailers to complete any outstanding safety Recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a retailer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000.00 per vehicle.

This Recall Service Bulletin serves as notification to all Jaguar retailers in the United States and Federalized Territories that any affected new vehicles may not be sold and delivered for customer use until the Recall repair is completed.

DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE

An issue has been identified on a limited number of Jaguar vehicles within the listed Affected Vehicle Range with the calibration of the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS). The calibration of the Restraints Control Module (RCM) does not provide the correct airbag deployment signals in the event of a crash.

A total of 307 vehicles are affected in the USA and Federalized Territories. Visit the Jaguar Business Network (JBN) website for a list of affected unsold vehicles (as of 01 March 2018).

 

EFFECT ON VEHICLE OPERATION

Vehicles may not meet some of the frontal airbag protection requirements in certain low speed impact scenarios. In the event of a vehicle crash, the Supplementary Restraint System may not provide the level of protection required to the driver and front passenger seat occupant, leading to an increased risk of injury.

 

SERVICE PROGRAM / REWORK ACTION

Owners will be notified and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized Jaguar retailer who will download the correct software to the vehicle.

There will be no charge to owners for this action under this program.

 

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will receive a notification by mail on or before 06 April 2018.

 

ACTION TO BE TAKEN

Use the Jaguar Land Rover claims submission system to ensure that the vehicle is affected by Program Code ‘H090’ prior to undertaking any rework action.

Retailers are required to HOLD affected new vehicles that are within your control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new vehicle sale pending completion of the rework action. Sold vehicles will be subject to the standard Recall notification and Recall bulletin process detailing the action required for vehicles in the hands of owners.

Jaguar Land Rover North America recommends that affected sales demonstrator and loaner vehicles are repaired before use and that used vehicles are repaired before sale. Retailers who choose to proceed against this recommendation, where legally permitted, must clearly and conspicuously disclose the open recall to the applicable customers.

The Option Code(s) that allows for the drive in/drive out allowance may only be claimed if the vehicle is brought into the workshop for this action alone to be undertaken.

Warranty claims must be submitted for payment within 30 calendar days of completion of the repair.

A These vehicles are being recalled because this defect, incorrect SRS calibration, may increase the risk of front seat occupant injury in certain low speed crash events.

A We have no concerns with the overall reliability of the vehicle. Jaguar Land Rover carefully monitors field data to ensure that any matters relating to safety and compliance are rigorously investigated.

A The correct, as intended SRS software with correct calibrations is now being uploaded to vehicles during the manufacturing process.

SITUATION:

An issue has been identified on certain vehicles within the listed Affected Vehicle Range with the calibration of the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS). The calibration of the Restraints Control Module (RCM) does not provide the correct deployment signals in the event of a crash.

Vehicles may not meet some of the frontal airbag protection requirements in certain low speed impact scenarios. In the event of a vehicle crash, the Supplementary Restraint System may not provide the level of protection required to the driver and front passenger seat occupant, leading to an increased risk of injury.

 

ACTION:

Retailers are required to HOLD affected new vehicles that are within your control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new vehicle sale pending completion of the Diagnostic Procedure detailed in this Technical Bulletin. Unsold vehicles should have this performed as part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) process but must have it completed prior to vehicle handover to the customer.

Affected vehicles already in the hands of customers should be updated at the next available opportunity.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:

This Diagnostic Procedure is only for vehicles requiring the Jaguar Land Rover-approved diagnostic tool with PATHFINDER.

CAUTIONS:
  • All ignition ON/OFF requests must be carried out; failure to perform these steps may cause damage to control modules in the vehicle.

Connect the Jaguar Land Rover-approved Midtronics battery power supply to the vehicle startup battery.

NOTE:
The Jaguar Land Rover-approved diagnostic tool must be loaded with PATHFINDER version 144 (or later).

 

Connect the Jaguar Land Rover-approved diagnostic tool to the vehicle and begin a new session.

NOTE:
The Jaguar Land Rover-approved diagnostic tool will read the correct Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for the current vehicle and automatically take the vehicle out of Transit mode if required.

 

Follow the on-screen prompts.

Select ECU Diagnostics.

Select Restraints Control Module [RCM].

Select Update ECU.

  1. Follow all on-screen instructions until the application completes successfully.
  2. When all tasks are complete, go to the next Step.

 

7

Exit the current session.

  1. If required, reset the vehicle to Transit mode.
  2. Select the Exit icon.

 

8

Disconnect the diagnostic tool and battery power supply from the vehicle.

Reprogramming

JLR Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) for Independent Repairers: Diagnostic Software / Module programming subscriptions - without security access - can be purchased via TOPIx (From the User ID - Options Menu – Programming subscriptions – click add). Module programming - with security access - is necessary to program the IPC, BCM, ECM (PCM), KVM, as well as keys. Licensed locksmiths and independent repairers must be active members of the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) registry and will need to purchase a subscription to Independent Module Programming with Security Access to program these components. Currently we are only able to support yearly module programming subscriptions with security access. SDD will only support Jaguar vehicles built from 1995 MY onward.
