EFFECT OF VEHICLE OPERATION
A damaged front seat belt pretensioner tube could prevent the pretensioner from correctly operating by not pre-tensioning the seat belt in the event of an accident where it would normally operate. This may result in a reduced level or complete loss of pre-tensioning in the event of a crash and increased occupant injury.
SERVICE PROGRAM/REWORK ACTION
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized retailer who will inspect the seat belt pretensioner tube for damage. If damage is identified, the seat belt retractor will be replaced. There will be no charge to the owners for this action under this program.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
Owner notification is expected to occur on or before the week of September 16, 2022.
ACTION TO BE TAKEN
Check the Jaguar
Land Rover
Warranty Portal to make sure affected vehicles are correctly identified prior to starting this campaign. The Warranty Portal will be updated to reflect only those vehicles affected.
Retailers/authorized repairers are required to Quarantine affected new vehicles that are within your control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new vehicle sale pending completion of the rework action. Affected vehicles already with customers should be updated at the next available opportunity. JLR North America recommends that affected sales demonstrator and loaner vehicles are repaired before use and that used vehicles are repaired before sale. Retailers/authorized repairers who choose to proceed against this recommendation, where legally permitted, must clearly and conspicuously disclose the open recall to the applicable customers.
A Safety Recall will be published when repair instructions are finalized, and any required parts have been procured.
Retailers/authorized repairers are reminded that they must not sell vehicles identified as affected by this campaign until such time as the repair has been successfully completed.
After the Safety Recall is launched, visit the British Brands Sales Suite (BBSS) website for a list of affected vehicles at your retailer/authorized repairer.
Chronology :
Following a notification from Autoliv that a defect had been identified during their manufacturing process that caused damage to a small number of front seat belt pretentioner tubes, Jaguar
Land Rover
(JLR) opened a PSCC (Product Safety & Compliance Committee) investigation on May 25, 2022.
The PSCC requested that Vehicle Assembly Plants conduct an exercise to identify if they had received any parts from the batches Autoliv deemed at risk and the population of affected vehicles that may have received parts from these batches.
On June 1, 2022, Autoliv presented the issue to the PSCC, Autoliv explained the issue that had been identified on one of their seatbelt production lines and the potential impact on the component functionality.
During June, each vehicle assembly plant conducted detailed research to identify which batches deemed at risk by Autoliv had been consumed and the specific vehicle identification numbers of vehicles that may have received parts from these batches.
In July, the qualification/identification of damaged parts was confirmed, and the subject matter experts within JLR confirmed the impact of damaged pretentioners on the Supplementary Restraints System (SRS) and on occupant protection.
At the PSCC of July 13, 2022, the scope was discussed along with exposure and vehicle disposition confirmed. Based on the feedback provided, the PSCC progressed the issue to the Recall Determination Committee (RDC) for review.
The RDC reviewed the issue on July 14, 2022, and concluded that it represented an unreasonable risk to safety and a voluntary safety recall should be conducted to inspect the pretensioner on all vehicles identified to be at risk of receiving a damaged pretensioner, and if a damaged component is identified, the seatbelt assembly should be replaced.
