573.6 (c) (6) – Chronology of Events for N400:

A Product Safety and Compliance Committee (PSCC) Investigation was opened on April 21, 2020, following an investigation into increased claim rates for vehicle cut out while at highway speed by the Global Critical Concerns team (GCCT).

During May and June 2020, the PSCC directed the engineering team to review the manufacturing processes and controls relating to the battery ground stud at the Nitra vehicle assembly plant and compare this to the processes employed at the Solihull vehicle assembly plant. The COVID-19 Pandemic caused some difficulty in conducting the investigation.

The engineering team reported their initial findings to the PSCC on June 23, 2020, where a review of the manufacturing processes was completed. Based on the field evidence, the investigation narrowed its scope to focus on vehicles manufactured at the Nitra vehicle assembly plant. The engineering team was also instructed to engage with the supplier of the related body panel to review its manufacturing data, quality controls, quality history for this part and associated assembly processes.

Through July and August 2020, the engineering team continually reported back to the PSCC to ensure the prescribed actions for this investigation were being completed by engineering and the supplier, to review analysis into the possible causes of the condition and to validate the scope of affected vehicles.

In late September 2020, the engineering team reported back to the PSCC they were unable to determine the origin of the condition and confirmed that all lines of technical investigation had been exhausted. The PSCC requested the engineering team to review the details and identify any areas which warrant more detailed investigations and the determine if this condition was related to seasonality, market unique conditions, unique production periods or any other factors and report to PSCC the full scope of affected vehicles.

The PSCC again reviewed the concern on October 27, 2020 where detailed data analysis was reviewed and the scope of the issue finalized and agreed. The PSCC progressed the issue to the Recall Determination Committee (RDC).

The RDC reviewed the issue on November 03, 2020 and concluded that it represented an unreasonable risk to safety and a voluntarily safety recall be conducted.

There has been one reported accident in the USA as a result of this concern.
