Summary

JaguareBay logo Land RovereBay logo North America, LLC (Land RovereBay logo) is recalling certain 2020 Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque vehicles. A software error may cause the instrument cluster to randomly alternate the speedometer and odometer units between Miles Per Hour (MPH) and Kilometers Per Hour (KM/H) without driver input to the display unit. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, “Control and Displays.”

 

Remedy

Land RovereBay logo will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. The recall began January 19, 2021. Owners may contact Land RovereBay logo customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land RovereBay logo’s number for this recall is N516.

DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT

An issue has been identified on certain Land RovereBay logo vehicles within the listed Affected Vehicle Range where, due to an error in a service software update, the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) randomly displays alternating speedometer and odometer units between Miles Per Hour (MPH) and Kilometers Per Hour (KM/H while the vehicle is in motion without the driver making any selection of display units.

Vehicles in this condition do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101 ‘Controls and Displays’ and other state level regulations requiring the speedometer to read in MPH.

EFFECT ON VEHICLE OPERATION

The information displayed to the driver may not be in the correct units for the country where the vehicle is being driven. This may confuse and distract the driver. In certain circumstances it could lead the driver to break the speed limit or drive the vehicle at excessive speed and potentially cause a crash.

 

SERVICE PROGRAM / REWORK ACTION

Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized Land RovereBay logo retailer who will update the vehicle software to the correct specification. There will be no charge to owners for this action under this Program.

 

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owner notification is expected to occur on or before January 29, 2021.

Use the JaguareBay logo Land RovereBay logo claims submission system to make sure that a vehicle is eligible for this program prior to undertaking any rework action.

Retailers are required to HOLD affected new vehicles that are within your control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new vehicle sale pending completion of the rework action.

Vehicles in this condition do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101 Controls and Displays and other state level regulations requiring the speedometer to read in MPH.

 

Q3 Can you tell me more about what is wrong with the vehicles?

Vehicles in this condition had received and in-service software update through retailers. The software updated caused the data buffer transfer to incorrectly cache the data in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) control module. Without the correctly cached data, the IPC will alternate between mph and km/h speedometer readings at random, and without any input or selection by the driver.

CONDITION SUMMARY:

SITUATION:

An issue has been identified on certain Land RovereBay logo vehicles within the listed Affected Vehicle where, due to an error in a service software update, the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) randomly displays alternating speedometer and odometer units between MPH and KM/H while the vehicle is in motion without the driver making any selection of display units.

Vehicles in this condition do not meet the requirements of Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 101 Controls, Tell-tales, Indicators and Sources of Illumination, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101 Controls and Displays, and other state level regulations requiring the speedometer to read in MPH.

 

ACTION:

Retailers are required to HOLD affected new vehicles that are within your control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new vehicle sale pending completion of the procedure(s) detailed in this Technical Bulletin. Unsold vehicles should have this performed as part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) process but must have it completed prior to vehicle handover to the customer.

Affected vehicles already in the hands of customers should be updated at the next available opportunity.

 

DIAGNOSTIC INSTRUCTION:

CAUTION:

All ignition ON/OFF requests MUST be performed; failure to do so may cause damage to vehicle control modules.

CAUTION:

A JaguareBay logo Land RovereBay logo-approved battery support unit must be connected to the vehicle startup battery during diagnosis / module programming.

Connect the JaguareBay logo Land RovereBay logo-approved battery support unit to the vehicle startup battery.

 

2.

NOTE:

The JaguareBay logo Land RovereBay logo-approved diagnostic equipment must be loaded with PATHFINDER version 310 (or later).

Connect the JaguareBay logo Land RovereBay logo-approved diagnostic equipment to the vehicle and begin a new session.

 

3.

Follow all on-screen instructions.

◦ 1. Select ‘ECU Diagnostics’.

◦ 2. Select ‘Gateway Module ‘A’ [GWM]’.

◦ 3. Select ‘Update ECU’.

◦ Follow the on-screen instructions until the application finishes successfully.

 

4.

Only if required: set the vehicle to Transit mode.

◦ Follow the on-screen instructions until the application finishes successfully.

 

5.

Exit the current session.

 

6.

Disconnect the diagnostic equipment and battery support unit from the vehicle.

Reprogramming

JLR Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) for Independent Repairers: Diagnostic Software / Module programming subscriptions - without security access - can be purchased via TOPIx (From the User ID - Options Menu – Programming subscriptions – click add). Module programming - with security access - is necessary to program the IPC, BCM, ECM (PCM), KVM, as well as keys. Licensed locksmiths and independent repairers must be active members of the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) registry and will need to purchase a subscription to Independent Module Programming with Security Access to program these components. Currently we are only able to support yearly module programming subscriptions with security access. SDD will only support JaguareBay logo vehicles built from 1995 MY onward.
