Summary
Jaguar
Land Rover
North America, LLC (Land Rover
) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles equipped with a Surround Camera System. Water may enter into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image not to appear on the display or display a distorted image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and add a new seal or replace the camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 8, 2024. Owners may contact Land Rover
customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover
’s number for this recall is N778.

REGULATORY INFORMATION
Jaguar
Land Rover
North America, LLC and Jaguar
Land Rover
Canada ULC have informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada (TC) of their intent to perform a Safety Recall on certain 2018 to 2022 model year Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles imported into the United States and Canada markets. Information relating to this Safety Recall will be posted on the NHTSA and TC websites.
This Safety Recall Administration Bulletin serves as notification to all retailers in the United States and Canada markets that any new affected vehicles may not be sold and delivered for customer use until the Safety Recall repair is completed. Violation of this requirement by a retailer/authorized repairer, in the USA only, could result in a maximum civil penalty of up to the equivalent of $27,168.00 USD per violation and the equivalent of $135,828,178.00 USD for a related series of
violations.
DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE AND THE EFFECT ON VEHICLE OPERATION
A concern has been identified on certain Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles where the reversing camera will display a poor image or no image at all as a result of water ingress into the camera housing/bezel.
In an intermittent or failed state, the rear view camera image display does not meet the requirements of FMVSS 111 and CMVSS 111, Mirrors and Rear Visibility Systems. Lack of display of the rear view camera image may result in the driver being unaware of objects or pedestrians behind the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
Initial owner notification is expected to occur on or before 8th March 2024.
ACTION TO BE TAKEN
Check the JLR Warranty Portal to make sure affected vehicles are correctly identified prior to starting this campaign. The Warranty Portal will be updated to reflect only those vehicles affected.
Retailers/authorized repairers are required to Quarantine affected new vehicles that are within your control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new vehicle sale pending completion of the rework action. Affected vehicles already with customers should be updated at the next available opportunity. JLR North America recommends that affected sales demonstrator and loaner vehicles are repaired before use and that used vehicles are repaired before sale. Retailers/authorized repairers who choose to proceed against this recommendation, where legally permitted, must clearly and conspicuously disclose the open recall to the applicable customers.
The Safety Recall repair procedures and any required parts and/or software are not currently available. A Safety Recall repair campaign will be published when all repair procedures and all required parts and/or software are available.
Retailers/authorized repairers are reminded this campaign until such time as the repair has been successfully completed.
573.6 (c) (6) – Chronology of Events (Recall N778)
Increasing numbers of field reports relating to rear camera system issues were received towards the end of 2022. This triggered a Product Safety and Compliance Committee (PSCC) investigation that was initiated in January, 2023.
The PSCC requested that this issue be investigated by the engineering teams to investigate the issue, identify scope and determine if there is any product related defect that is causing the issue.
In February, 2023, the team reported to the PSCC that there were changes made to the design of the rear camera part way through the 2018 Model Year vehicle programmes where a part common with other vehicle lines was introduced. The focus of the investigation was agreed to major on this revised design of part applied to Range Rover (L405) and Range Rover Sport (L494) surround camera system specification vehicles. During April, May and June, 2023, the team continued to report progress of the investigation to PSCC. This included reviews of data related to issues reported from the field and testing plans.
Testing was undertaken in July and August, 2023, to understand the issue further and evaluate water ingress risks for the parts installed on vehicles. Further tests were completed in September, 2023, with the results reviewed at PSCC. Further tests to understand any corrosion exposure were then started in November, 2023, with testing outcomes reported in January, 2024.
This testing revealed the presence of a defect. This showed there is a design issue with the sealing system which does not adequately seal in all use cases and prevent water from passing through the sealing system. This was shown to allow water to accumulate around the camera leading to failure.
At the PSCC of January 09, 2024, the results of the testing were presented, and it was agreed that the issue be progressed to the Recall Determination Committee (RDC) for consideration.
The RDC reviewed the issue on January 11, 2024, and concluded that this issue constitutes a compliance defect and a non-compliance recall be conducted to remedy affected vehicles.
There have been no reported crashes, injuries or fires as a result of this concern.
JLR has received 210 field reports in the US relating to this issue between January 30, 2018, to January 02, 2024.

Retailers/authorized repairers are reminded that they must not sell vehicles identified as affected by this campaign until such time as the repair has been successfully completed.
