Chronology :
Following a report from the field in late January, 2023, of a potential concern with the High Voltage (HV) Battery pack installed on a Range Rover PHEV vehicle a battery assembly and vehicle assembly plant-wide investigation was instigated. As a precautionary measure, in March, 2023, an Update Prior to Sale (UPS) was put in place to instruct sales stop for potentially affected unsold vehicles.
Following this, an investigation was opened at the Product Safety & Compliance Committee (PSCC) on April 21, 2023. The PSCC requested the Battery Assembly Plant Team fully investigate and define the scope of this issue.
At the PSCC on May 2, 2023, an update on the progress of the UPS was provided. The Battery Assembly Plant team reported their initial findings that the concern with the HV battery pack may be related to an incorrectly fitted bolt connecting the busbar to the HV connector.
During May and June, 2023, the PSCC was updated on the progress of the UPS and the Battery Assembly Plant team investigation into the scope as well as potential consequences of an incorrectly fitted bolt connecting the busbar to the HV connector.
In July, 2023, results of HV battery inspections of components returned as part of the UPS were presented to the PSCC.
On August 1, 2023, the conclusion of the Battery Assembly Plant investigation and returned battery inspections were presented. Further, a final review of the status of the UPS revealed there were vehicles known to have entered into commerce. Based on the feedback received, the PSCC progressed the issue to the Recall Determination Committee (RDC) for review.
The RDC reviewed the issue on August 3, 2023, and concluded that it represented an unreasonable risk to safety and that a voluntary safety recall should be conducted.
There have been no reported accidents or injuries as a result of this concern.
JLR has received no reports of vehicle fires in the US.
