Steering Column Issues Requiring Replacement

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Range Rover (LM)
Model Year: 2003-2009
VIN: 3A101029-9A306625

MARKETS:

NAS

CONDITION SUMMARY:

Situation: The steering column may require replacement due to certain issues or damage.

Cause: This may be caused by one or more of the following:

  • Inoperative tilt mechanism;
  • Steering column lock mechanism issue;
  • Reach spindle thread damage; and/or
  • Rotational ‘click’ noises attributed to internal steering column bearings.

NOTE: For VINs 3A101029-6A216926: if the vehicle has not been updated as part of former Service Action SB028 and the steering column tilt mechanism faults when the tilt motor reaches the full extent of upward travel, an upgrade kit is available. Refer to SB028NAS3 on TOPIx for details.

NOTE: ‘Noisy’ tilt mechanism motors should NOT require replacement of the steering column assembly. A ‘noisy’ tilt mechanism motor should be rectified by installing a tilt motor repair kit (QME500070) in accordance to Technical Bulletin 57/01/03/NAS (issue 2 or later).

Action: If the issues reported with the steering column are not repairable using Technical Bulletins: SB028NAS3, ‘Steering Column Tilt Mechanism Upgrade’; 57/01/03/NAS (issue 2 or later), ‘Tilt Motor Mechanism Binding at Top Position’; 57/04/05/NAS, ‘Steering Column Reach Motor Jamming’; and/or 57/05/05/NAS (issue 2 or later), ‘Steering Column Reach Motor Noise’, refer to the Service Instruction outlined below.

PARTS:

NOTE: New steering columns below have the full upward tilt angle reduced by 0.5 degrees. New columns will be supplied without the steering angle sensor to reduce parts complexity.

NOTE: Part number QMB000165 DOES NOT need to reworked with the spacer kit; these may have been supplied under warranty instead of the ordered QMB500711 part until it became available. Part number QMB000165 has been built to the new specification with a long tilt spindle nut and DOES NOT require the spacer kit to be installed.

QMB500691 Steering column – with seat memory function – from VIN 6A198058 Quantity: 1

TOOLS:

NOTE: This is an ‘Active Bulletin’ that will display a functional programming shortcut if accessed within a diagnostic session using SDD.

WARRANTY:

NOTE: Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to TOPIx to obtain the latest repair time.

NOTE: DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

SERVICE INSTRUCTION:

NOTE: ‘Noisy’ tilt mechanism motors should NOT require replacement of the steering column assembly. A ‘noisy’ tilt mechanism motor should be rectified by installing a tilt motor repair kit (QME500070) in accordance to Technical Bulletin 57/01/03/NAS (issue 2 or later).

  1. Renew the steering column assembly (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section -57).

CAUTION: A Jaguar Land Rover-approved Midtronics battery power supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during SDD diagnosis / module programming.

CAUTION: Ensure all ignition ‘ON’ / ignition ‘OFF’ requests are carried out; failure to perform these steps may cause damage to control modules in the vehicle.

NOTE: SDD must be loaded with DVD139.03 v.186 or later.

  1. Connect the Jaguar Land Rover-approved Midtronics battery power supply to the vehicle battery.
  2. Turn ignition ‘ON’ (engine not running).
  3. Connect the Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) system to the vehicle and begin a new session.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts, allowing SDD to read the VIN and identify the vehicle and initiating the data collect sequence.
  5. Select ‘Diagnosis’ from the Session Type screen.
  6. Select the ‘Selected Symptoms’ tab, and then select:
    • Brake system > Steering angle sensor calibration
  7. Select ‘continue’.
  8. Select the ‘Recommendations’ tab, and then select ‘ Run ‘ to perform the ‘Brake – system – steering angle sensor calibration’ option.
  9. Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.
  10. Exit the current session.
  11. Disconnect the SDD and the battery power supply from the vehicle.

JLR Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) for Independent Repairers: Diagnostic Software / Module programming subscriptions – without security access – can be purchased via TOPIx (From the User ID – Options Menu – Programming subscriptions – click add). Module programming – with security access – is necessary to program the IPC, BCM, ECM (PCM), KVM, as well as keys. Licensed locksmiths and independent repairers must be active members of the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) registry and will need to purchase a subscription to Independent Module Programming with Security Access to program these components. Currently we are only able to support yearly module programming subscriptions with security access. SDD will only support Jaguar vehicles built from 1995 MY onward.
